Running away to find home.

Ipoh has fantastic white coffee. It keeps you going, even when you don’t want to be kept going. As we were driving back from Ipoh, on the highway, those who had consumed the boiling broth were singing a catalogue of 80’s and early 90’s hits together.

Ipoh also has fantastic noodles. As we chanced upon a self-proclaimed “specialist” in noodles, who also claimed to be “the best in town”, we became believers.

Ipoh girls also go out with their families. Their innocence has been preserved, thanks to the diligent mothers in Ipoh who don’t want their daughters to be ravaged by the dangers of the outside world as they go to their yum char sessions alone.

We were on a quest. A quest to find the legendary Golden Village of Jungle Women. We had found the secret map upon the entrance of the A’ Famosa, whereby the precise location of the Village was given to us. We were showed that the Village was close to Ipoh, the capital of Perak.

(How we ascertained the location of the Village, I can’t tell you. I simply can’t, because I can’t remember how Justin actually had the cockamamie idea to superimpose a proper map of Peninsula Malaysia onto this picture of the A’Famosa’s entrance. Anyway, after the addition of a penis [it has to be seen to be believed!] to the A’Famosa’s façade, and many longitudinal and latitudinal lines later, we reached our conclusion. This was a lengthy process that can be showed over a few mouseclicks but cannot be described in words).

It was our way of celebrating our Malaysian roots: by unearthing a lost Malaysian treasure…the Golden Village of Jungle Women.

Theo, Sazman, Justin and I took the fabled smoke-blue Landeater Proton Iswara GLi 1.5. Now, there’re two routes that you can take to Ipoh, and in my haste, I directed us to the wrong one. If anyone’s interested, the fastest way to Ipoh is to get to Jalan Kuching and never look back. This is known as Route 1, which can also be called the real North-South Highway. I assumed that we could take our normal route to Lumut and reach Teluk Intan and go to Ipoh from there, but I was mistaken. It’s a good thing we had our fabled roadtrip map for the ride. We veered slightly off-course, but it was a good thing that we were still in the Rawang vicinity when I realized my mistake.

At this point, I’d like to tell you all that Justin was driving.

Our trip was uneventful until we chanced upon the funkiest black Kenari you’d ever seen in your life. Black, with external blue neon lights everywhere. We chased the thing for a good portion of the time --- we were sad to see it go.

We arrived in Ipoh a little after midnight. Our initial reaction was that it’s an awesome town. In my memory, it was really my first time there. A day trip is in order, because there’d obviously be a lot more things to see.

As for the Village; we never really did find it. But there’s always a next time involved with intrepid explorers like ourselves.

My arse.

Road conditions were fairly good, and it was toll-free. It took us about 3 hours+, but it was still worthwhile. There's actually quite a bit to see along the way. I’d also say that taking the same route back to KL would’ve been more economical. In the Landeater, it was about RM 60 spent on gas. Food in Ipoh wasn’t that bad, because Theo and Justin spent more money due to eating more, but it came down to about RM 7 to RM 15 per person. The noodles came in soup, with a bowl of pork balls (8), and a whole chicken. It was worth it.

The coffee was RM 1.50 per glass. Theo, Saz and I had about 2 glasses, and Theo bought back 2 whole packs for about RM 12 per pack, if I’m not wrong. Good stuff. Strong stuff. Bad news.

Anyway, last night involved finding the legendary lovers’ cliff in Cheras. We tried looking, but we couldn’t find it. If there’s anyone who can tell me where it is, please tell me. Where’s Bukit Miharja?

On a bright note, don’t go to the Projet on the East-West link in Cheras…visit the Esso for all your culinary needs, especially if you’re feeling hungry at 3 in the morning; Esso sells their wares at a cheaper price.

This has been a week of road living, in a sense.

Anyway, will try getting photos to post.
